Introduced to the House of Lords in 2015, after 24 years in the Commons and 12 as a minister.
The record
He took his seat as Lord Hain of Neath in November 2015.
From 2017 he used privilege to name banks and professional firms handling money that left the country under Jacob Zuma, and came back to it as the Bain exclusion was imposed and then lifted.
On Northern Ireland, he opposed the amnesty proposals of 2020 and the 2023 Legacy Act that followed, which granted an amnesty opposed by all Northern Ireland victims and political parties. In February 2024 he told the House that inquests were being held back until the Act discontinued them.
He has also spoken and voted on civil liberties and protest, including the anti-boycott Bill in February 2024 and the proscription of Palestine Action in July 2025.
